Work Has Begun On The $10m Upgrade to Perth Sporting Facility

The Willetton Basketball Stadium in Perth’s southern suburbs is undergoing a $10 million upgrade with sod being officially turned.

The 15-year process will result will double the number of courts from four to eight and include new change rooms, storage rooms, toilets, administration and social areas.

The Western Australian Government contributed $1.5 million to the project through the Community Sporting and Recreation Facilities Fund, while the Commonwealth Government provided $5.5 million, and the City of Canning $2.2 million.

The association has seen a boom in participation numbers in the area, but have lacked the facilities to cater for the demand.

“At the start of every season, we try and fill all the spots and get most of the waiting list down,” Willetton Basketball Association president, Phil Nixon said to the canning times.

“We create teams, we’re playing at four venues on Saturdays, but within two weeks the waiting list starts building again.”

Mr Nixon said their numbers had increased by around 50 per cent since 2003 and had gone to extraordinary lengths to ensure as many people as possible got a game.

The Willetton Basketball Association will contribute up to $1 million for the works, which are expected to be completed by early 2020.
