Optus has revealed it is offering Australian school children free access to Optus Sport for the upcoming FIFA Women’s World Cup 2019 which will be held in France for the first time.
With only 17 days until the first ball is kicked, the complimentary offer aims to give women’s sport greater visibility and change the future Australian school children see.
“We’re delighted that Optus Sport will bring the thrills and excitement of the FIFA Women’s World Cup to children across Australia and we hope our complimentary access to the event will capture the imagination of a new generation,” Optus CEO, Allen Lew, said.
Although there were significant streaming problems during the men’s World Cup last year, Optus is gaining ground on Telstra’s market share, reporting double the audience numbers over the past year and signups to Optus Sport are up over 50% year-on-year.
Deputy CEO Kelly Bayer Rosmarin added, “Optus is very excited to be supporting the Matildas on their quest for the Women’s World Cup in France next month, we will all be watching on proudly as the women take the field to represent Australia in the biggest tournament in women’s football.
“Optus is proud to play its part by giving every school-aged child the opportunity to watch these role models show us what is possible through sport.”
School-aged children can redeem the complimentary offer by visiting their nearest Optus store from Thursday 23 May 2019.
Children aged under 17 will be required to visit the store with a parent or guardian, while those aged between 17 and 19 can alternatively present a form of official identification.
The FIFA Women’s World Cup will be hosted in France for the first time and played throughout nine different cities.
Furthermore, the female-led broadcast team brings together some of Australia’s best female journalists and football talent to lead the 2019 FIFA Women’s World Cup coverage, including respected presenter and former Matilda, Amy Duggan, along with Heather Garriock, Alicia Ferguson, Mel McLaughlin, John Aloisi and Mark Schwarzer.

The Teclo’s announcement follows on from the huge success of Optus Sport’s coverage of the English Premier League which concluded on May 13 to record numbers and the final round of the Premier League saw the highest ever viewing numbers for Optus Sport.
