Gold Coast Remains The Home Of Gymnastics For Four Years
ymnastics Australia has announced a four-year partnership extension with Tourism Events Queensland and Major Events Gold Coast that will see the Gold Coast Sports and Leisure Centre host six premier events.
Gymnastics Australia CEO, Kitty Chiller, said the addition of the sport’s main elite competition event, the Australian Championships, boosts the strength of the partnership.
“Since 2018, the Gold Coast has hosted our premier participation event, the National Clubs Carnival and our community have loved the experience, reflecting in participation numbers almost doubling,” Chiller said.
“We are excited to be extending our partnership with the City of Gold Coast to now also host the Australian Gymnastics Championships, where the top gymnasts from each state and territory compete for the title of Australian Champion in all Gym Sports for the next two years.
“We want to thank Major Events Gold Coast and Tourism and Events Queensland for their ongoing commitment to supporting the development of gymnastics in the state and across the country and we cannot wait to get back into the competition arena next year, after a challenging 2020 with no major events held due to COVID-19,” she said.
Tourism Minister, Kate Jones, said the partnership with Gymnastics Australia will play a key role in Queensland’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic.
“Major events like this pump thousands of dollars back into the local businesses, support local jobs and help to rebuild our economy,” Jones said.
“These events will deliver a great boost for local businesses at a time when everyone is doing it tough.
“The Gold Coast is one of the most beautiful places in the world to visit and this package of events give visitors another reason to book a trip.
“Only the Palaszczuk Government has a plan to rebuild our economy and create local jobs.
“Events like this that support local businesses and local jobs are crucial to that strategy,” she said.
With the announcement, Gymnastics Australia has also shared the dates of their events for 2021, with the Australian Gymnastics Championships to take place in May and the National Clubs Carnival split over July and September dates.
