Nielsen Sport’s latest social content ratings have been released, showing the success of the Australian Men’s Cricket team as the number one ranked team for social media engagements.
For the week commencing May 4, the Australians Men’s Cricket team led all others across Facebook, Twitter, with NBL team, Melbourne United ranking as the team in the top 100 to see the largest percentage increase in owned engagements, up 771% from the week prior.
Out of the top 10 teams for engagement, it was found 88% of engagements were driven through Instagram, with Collingwood F.C. coming in second, followed by South Africa Stormers, West Coast Eagles, Geelong F.C., Richmond F.C., NZ Hurricanes, Newcastle Knights, Sydney Swans, and Carlton F.C. to round out the top 10.
With regards to growth from the week prior, Melbourne United were followed by Gold Coast Titans, Newcastle Knights, NZ Hurricanes, NZ Chiefs, Canberra United – Women, Kangaroos, Queensland Firebirds, North Queensland Cowboys, and Adelaide F.C. to finish the top 10.
Looking at individual athletes, Australian Men’s Cricket Team former captain, Steve Smith, is the most engaged athlete, after combining throwback posts to past seasons of the Indian Premier League (IPL), and a behind the scenes look at his training in isolation.
He is followed in the top 10 by Siya Kolisi, Kalyn Ponga, TJ Perenara, R.J. Hampton, Pat Cummins, Marnus Labuschagne, David Warner, Nic Naitanui, and Patrick Mills.
The results of the social content ratings show the effectiveness of finding new and creative methods to engage sports fans while almost every professional competition in the world still remains either suspended or cancelled due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
